Restoring a Broken Heart

If you have an item of extreme value, and it becomes damaged, what do you do? You can try to get a cheap or quick fix. However, the item may lose value in the process. Most of the time, when someone wants a valuable or antique item restored, they want it as close to the original as possible. It can cost an astronomical amount of money and time to search out the original parts.  A true “restorer” will even try to match the original paint color of an item. Often returning it to the manufacturer is the best way to go.  No one has more knowledge of the original.

And so it is with the heart.  Our first inclination when it breaks may be to blame the Manufacturer. But, the truth is that it can become cracked and damaged with the wear and tear of life, and become broken with a tragedy. We may try to fix it in other ways and with other things. Well meaning, compassionate people may try to do and say the “right” thing to help mend it. The best way to repair a heart though, is to contact the Creator.  Only He has the intimate knowledge and gentle hands to truly mend and restore it. It will take time. Restoring things of value takes time.  It does cost something- giving up control, relinquishing our pride, letting go of anger, even surrendering our very selves.

Hearts weren’t made to be broken. Souls weren’t made to be crushed. It happened that way because of the sin that entered the world.  It breaks God’s heart to see ours break.  He wants to heal us.  When my kids hurt, I open my arms wide and take them in, and hold them until they are done crying or the hurt has been eased.  How much more does our Heavenly Father, who is perfect, want to hold us when we hurt? But He also has the power to heal. To restore our hearts. To make it possible to feel joy again.  He opens His arms out to us and welcomes us in, to put our heads on His chest, and rest until the worst is over.
